Y: The Last Man - The Deluxe Edition Book One
I know I’ve talked about this series before, but I’ve really jumped into it with both feet. My library has the complied deluxe editions and whoever thought to combine so many issues into one large volume is a genius! I looooove this series!
What would we do if the entire male population was wiped out…except for one man? This apocalyptic series envisions a world where one man is left, faced with the responsibility of repopulating the earth. But can his children survive? And can he remain loyal to the girlfriend that he loves, but who lives halfway across the world? This story is fast, intense, and incredibly gripping. I love the complex moral dilemmas that arise out of the fact that there is only one single man in a world full of women. It suddenly becomes his responsibility to repopulate the species, a responsibility that he struggles to accept and come to terms with. The women in his life struggle to help or harm him. Extremists, male-haters, rise up to kill him off, their attempts threatening to condemn the entire human species. Every person that Yorick (the last man) and his group encounter is faced with the decision to help their cause or to condemn it.
Not only is the story incredibly gripping, the art work is absolutely stunning. It’s impossible not to stop and admire it. And the incredible details. It’s colourful, dramatic, and it takes Vaughan’s story to the next level. I admire the consistency and the uniqueness of each character. Each is so details and thorough that they come alive on the pages.
Overall, excellent excellent graphic novel. It raises some tough questions and provokes some pretty intense thoughts. It’ll sometimes take you out of your comfort zone with shocking visuals, but that’s the reality of a world in turmoil. Neither writer nor artists shy away from this. They confront this terrible possibility to create one of the best comic series that I think I’ve ever read.

I’ve only read the first volume of this series so far but I really enjoyed it and need to get to the rest of them. Brian K Vaughn is just a fantastic writer.
